Course Description

The Department of Economic Development and Tourism's (DEDAT) number one priority to make sure that all internet newbies know how to make the most of the internet.

The Internet Champion Initiative/Course, is a digital literacy programme developed to ensure that the citizens have a basic understanding of the internet and how it can work for you.

The course consists of seven 2-minute animations covering the basics about being connected, such as: What is the Internet?, What is WiFi?, Online Safety, and more.

Upon completion you will receive a certificate of completion from the Western Cape: Department of Economic Development and Tourism

Course Modules

1. The Internet and You

Do you know how to connect to the internet to use and share information? This module helps you to understand what the internet is and how it can be relevant to your life and feel encouraged to personally engage with the internet.

2. How to Connect To The Internet

This module helps you to understand what it means to be “connected” to the internet, find out about the basic steps involved in connecting. We tell you all about the different kinds of devices you can use to connect to the internet, data, service providers and how Wi-Fi works. We also show you how to connect to the internet using Wi-Fi on your device.

3. Welcome to Wi-Fi

This module helps you to understand the concepts of Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi hotspots and have a basic understanding of how to find and use a Wi-Fi zone to access the internet. We tell you where to find Wi-Fi hotspots and how to recognise free Wi-Fi to go online.

4. Navigating the Internet

In this module you will learn about the different kinds of content and sites you can access and participate in on the internet, including websites, social media platforms as well as using email. Once you know how to navigate the web, there are many different things you can find out and learn and do.

5. Being A Digital Citizen

Do you want to learn about the opportunities and responsibilities that go with using the Internet to engage with others in a responsible way? Learn more about social media applications like Facebook and Twitter, and how they can help you connect with family and friends around the world. Differentiate between appropriate and inappropriate behaviour on a social media site or forum.

6. Being Safe on The Internet

Do you want to understand the difference between risky versus responsible internet use, and basic security measures. Learn how to recognise criminals online and how to protect yourself from computer viruses by using passwords and antivirus programmes. You can feel safe using the internet if you take steps to protect yourself.

7. How the Internet Can Change Your Life

In this module you will consolidate your understanding of the internet and see how the various uses and benefits can come together to bring substantive improvements to everyday life. This includes understanding and accessing a variety of different websites for different purposes. Now get ready to get connected.
