Course Description

Digital Literacy Essentials 101 are free online courses covering the basics of digital literacy. It consists of 12 courses covering topics such as computing fundamentals (hardware, software etc); productivity programs (spreadsheets, word processing, presentations etc); online browsing and communications including online etiquette. A badge is issued on completion of each course

Course Modules

1. Introduction to Hardware

In this course you will learn more about what a computer is and the different types of computers. This will help to enhance your understanding and bring new meaning to what you already know and what you need to know about the computers.

2. Introduction to Software

This course will help you to understand the different types of software and their applications. This includes an understanding of:

  • Operating system software
  • Application software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, mobile apps)
  • Antivirus Programs (Utility Software) and (Housekeeping)

3. Introduction to Online Research & Good Citizenship

This course will help you navigate the internet by learning about online research and good citizenship. This will cover topics such as:

  • Finding location
  • Finding government tenders online
  • Research government related topics & discussions
  • Other places (browsers & search engines) to find online information
  • Evaluating online information (Wiki / Truste websites)
  • Antivirus Programs (Utility Software) and (Housekeeping)

4. Introduction to Practicing Good Online Citizenship

This session will help you to practice good online citizenship by understanding:

  • Cyber bullying (what and how)
  • Plagiarism (what and how)
  • Flame war (what and how)

5. Introduction to Cyber Security

This session will help you by providing an intro to and understanding of cyber security by explaining concepts like:

  • Internet security settings
  • Firewall consists of software and hardware set up between an internal computer network and the Internet
  • Antivirus
  • Anti-spyware is a type of software that is designed to detect and remove unwanted spyware programs.

6. Introduction to Word Processing

This session will help you understand word processing fundamentals like:
